West Bengal: High-Level Centre-State Meeting on Jal Jeevan, Prevention of Ganga Pollution & Water Conservation

West Bengal Chief Minister Shri Suvendu Adhikari  participated in an important virtual meeting organised by the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The meeting was attended by Union Jal Shakti Minister Shri C. R. Patil, Union Minister of State Shri V. Somanna, and senior officials from both the Central and State Governments.

The meeting included detailed discussions on the ongoing projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission in West Bengal, drinking water supply systems, rainwater conservation, prevention of Ganga pollution, and Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) projects. Union Minister Shri C. R. Patil informed that an estimated allocation of ₹2,775 crore has been planned for West Bengal for the financial year 2026–27, subject to fulfilment of MoU conditions and progress in project implementation.

Special emphasis was laid on expediting the implementation of drinking water projects in the districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Purulia. The Centre pointed out that discrepancies related to DPRs, expenditure on cancelled or duplicate projects, and the pending Apex Committee report need to be resolved at the earliest.

The construction of STPs for preventing Ganga pollution was also discussed during the meeting. The Union Minister stated that several projects had been delayed due to the non-availability of land. On this issue, Chief Minister Shri Suvendu Adhikari directed the administration to take necessary steps on priority and assured effective measures for preventing pollution in the Ganga.

The meeting also stressed the importance of rainwater harvesting and transforming the ‘Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari’ programme into a mass movement. District administrations were urged to play an active role in completing water conservation-related works before the upcoming monsoon season.

Chief Minister Shri Suvendu Adhikari stated that the Government of West Bengal will work in close coordination with the Centre to ensure rapid progress in the fields of drinking water supply, environmental protection, and sustainable water management in the public interest. He said, “Our government is committed to fulfilling the expectations of the people of Bengal. Completing the work under the Jal Jeevan Mission and ensuring safe drinking water to every household remains our commitment.”

At the end of the meeting, the Union Jal Shakti Minister assured full cooperation to the Government of West Bengal and conveyed his best wishes for the development of the State.
