"Railways Sanctions ₹916 Crore for NJP–Siliguri Doubling Project"

The Ministry of Railway has sanctioned Rs 916.18 crores towards the doubling work of the New Jalpaiguri to Siliguri railway line covering a stretch of 7.15 kilometres. 

Raju Bista wrote on, "This important project will extend the ongoing Alubari Road-Thakurganj rail line doubling work right up to Siliguri Junction, encompassing all the important stations including Bagdogra, Naxalbari, and Adhikari. 

This development holds immense significance for the Siliguri-Terai area, as it will substantially ease the existing rail traffic congestion, reduce delays, and improve overall connectivity for both passengers and freight services. 

By adding a second line on this vital section, we will significantly enhance the capacity of the rail network in our reg

ion. This will allowing smoother and faster movement of trains in this important section. More importantly, it will allow for introduction of more trains for our region.


Further, the enhanced infrastructure and a massive investment of Rs 916.18 crores will boost economic activities in our region. It will also add another layer of critical connectivity in this critical "Chicken's Neck" region.

Reportedly, West Bengal presently has 61 sanctioned new railway projects as part of a significant Rs 1 Lakh crore infrastructure led by the Ministry of Railways in conjunction with the state government. 

Railways projects that are either fully or partially located within the state of West Bengal are managed under the Eastern Railway (ER), South Eastern Railway (SER), and Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Zones of Indian Railways. Detailed information regarding the railway projects, including costs, expenditures, and allocations, is accessible to the public. These initiatives cover both  suburban and mainline connectivity, extending over hundreds of kilometers throughout North and South Bengal. 

Key projects include: 

New Line & Multi-Tracking: The development of new railway lines and the enhancement to multi-track/double-track systems. 

Bullet Train Proposal: A suggested high speed rail traversing Siliguri , significantly reducing travel durations between northern and eastern India. 

Station Upgrades: The modernization of 102 railway stations statewide under the Amrit Bharat scheme. 

Kolkata Metro: The introduction of 60 new -generation Metro trains over the forthcoming four to five years. 

Major Rail Line & Capacity Projects 

Santragachi-Kharagpur 4th Line:  This project has been approved to enhance capacity, improve freight speed, and increase passenger convenience throughout the South Eastern Railway Network. 

Sivok- Rango New Line: A 44-Kilometer with a budget of Rs, 11,973 crore, aimed at liking Sikkim to the Indian Railways network through West Bengal 

Six New South Eastern Railway Lines: Authoruzation has been granted, and work is commencing on several lines, including Kanthi-Egra, Nandkumar-Baliapanda Bowaichandi- Arambagh and Bankura-Purulia 

Tarakeshwar- Bishnupur New Line: An 83-Kilometer project currently experiencing delays in the Goghat-Karamarpukur section due to local opposition. 

Balurghat-Hill and Kaliyaganj-Buniadpur New Lines: New Connectivity initiatives in the North Bengal areas.
