WBPCC Condemns Uprooting of Ex-PM’s Statue

On Sunday, Subhankar Sarkar the West Bengal Pradesh Congress President has expressed strong outrage over the demolition of former Prime Minister Jawarharlal Nehru's statue. The incident occurred in West Burdwan district's Durgapur. As per the WBPCC, the statue of Pandit Nehru, located in front of a meditation centre near Harshavardhan Primary School in Durgapur. However, The District Congress leadership has already staged a protest against the incident and demanded that the administration immediately restore the statue to its original location.

While condemning to the incident, West Bengal Pradesh Congress President Shri Subhankar Sarkar said: "Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was not merely a leader of the Congress—he was a freedom fighter, India’s first Prime Minister and one of the principal architects of modern India. Uprooting his statue and dumping it in a wooded area is not merely an insult to a statue; it is a grave insult to India’s freedom struggle, our history and the democratic traditions of our country.”

He further said: “It is the responsibility of the administration to investigate and establish who committed this disgraceful act, irrespective of their political ideology. We will accept no excuses. Pandit Nehru’s statue must be immediately restored to its original location with due dignity. At the same time, every person involved in this incident must be identified and arrested, and strict punishment must be ensured in accordance with the law.”

Shri Sarkar also said, “Political differences may exist, but no one has the right to insult the first Prime Minister of the country. The Congress will resist, through political and democratic means and with all its strength, those who seek to erase history and insult the great leaders of India’s freedom struggle.”

The Pradesh Congress demands that the administration and the police immediately restore Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s statue to its original location with due respect and dignity, and swiftly identify and arrest the miscreants involved in this reprehensible incident.

Otherwise, in protest against this extreme insult, the Indian National Congress will be compelled to launch a larger democratic movement.
