The BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) has commenced comprehensive preparations for the forthcoming Howrah and Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections. The Organization has already implemented numerous strategic measures, encompassing candidate identification, ward-level campaign initiatives, and the emphasis of concerns related to municipal services and infrastructure. This information was conveyed by prominent BJP functionary and Rajya Sabha Member Rahul Sinha during a press conference.
Addressing the press conference, Rahul Sinha held the Trinamool Congress government responsible for the prolonged delay in holding elections to the Howrah Municipal Corporation and the deterioration of civic amenities. He stated that Bally Municipality was initially merged with the Howrah Municipal Corporation for political convenience and subsequently separated again. This, he alleged, further aggravated administrative and civic problems in Howrah. He criticised the state government over the poor drainage system, deteriorating roads and the overall lack of adequate civic amenities.
Referring to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, he alleged that central assistance provided for the development of urban infrastructure had not been utilised appropriately. Consequently, Kolkata has failed to achieve the level of infrastructure development and civic amenities that should have been available to its residents.
Speaking about the upcoming municipal elections, Rahul Sinha stated that although the official election schedule has not yet been announced, the BJP is moving ahead with full preparation in both Howrah and Kolkata. He remarked that the BJP is effectively preparing to contest the elections on its own, while raising questions about the preparedness and activities of other opposition parties. He asserted that the BJP is ready to contest the elections with its full organisational strength and through democratic means.
Commitment to Free, Fair, Peaceful and Bloodshed-Free Elections
Rahul Sinha stated that previous municipal elections in Howrah and Kolkata had witnessed allegations of violence, bomb attacks, firing and political intimidation. The BJP, he said, is committed to ensuring that the forthcoming elections are free, fair, peaceful and bloodshed-free.
He informed that party workers have already been instructed to maintain peace and discipline and ensure that no activity leads to unrest. The party will take organisational action against anyone found attempting to create disturbances, while the police administration and the Election Commission will take appropriate action within their respective jurisdictions.
October 26 Last Date for Applications for Candidature
Rahul Sinha highlighted the unprecedented enthusiasm among party workers seeking to contest the upcoming municipal elections. Recalling his association with the party since its foundation in 1980, he stated that he had rarely witnessed such widespread enthusiasm for municipal elections.
He categorically announced that October 26, 2026, is the last date for submitting applications for candidature in the Howrah and Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections. No applications will be accepted after this deadline. Applications received within the stipulated period will be scrutinised, and candidates will be selected through a democratic process.
He emphasised that priority would be given to dedicated party workers, candidates with a strong possibility of winning and individuals with a clean public image. The party will give due importance to candidates who are BJP members, enjoy public acceptance in their respective areas and have a credible chance of winning. He further stated that individuals with involvement in criminal activities or a negative public reputation would not be given preference.
BJP to Release Ward-Wise Chargesheets
Rahul Sinha announced that the BJP would publish ward-wise chargesheets highlighting shortcomings in civic amenities, failures in development and issues concerning the utilisation of public funds in both Howrah and Kolkata.
Following an approach similar to the one adopted during the Assembly elections, the party will place detailed, ward-specific information before the public. He alleged that under the Trinamool Congress government, funds meant for civic development had been misused and several development initiatives had been stalled. The BJP will present these issues before residents through its ward-wise chargesheets.
Commitment to the Overall Development of Howrah and Kolkata
Rahul Sinha stated that the BJP aims to bring about a comprehensive transformation of civic infrastructure in both cities. The party seeks to develop Kolkata into one of the country's leading metropolitan cities while transforming Howrah into a modern, clean and well-developed urban centre equipped with improved civic amenities.
He emphasised that modern urban planning, improved drainage systems, better roads and the expansion of civic services would be central to the development agenda. He expressed confidence that the support of the Central Government, along with the party's development-oriented plans, would accelerate the transformation of both cities.
Highlighting the BJP's organisational preparedness, Rahul Sinha reiterated that the party is entering the electoral contest with full strength. He appealed to the people of Howrah and Kolkata to support the BJP in its mission to transform both cities into cleaner, more modern and citizen-friendly urban centres.
